He completed his secondary education at Tarsus American College and graduated from Hacettepe University Faculty of Medicine in 1982. In 1984, he began his residency training in the Department of Psychiatry at Ankara University Faculty of Medicine. In 1985, he won a Council of Europe scholarship and worked in England on "Community Psychiatry" and "Different models in structuring mental health services".<\/p>\n
Between 1986 and 1988, as a British Council fellow, she received training in "behavioral therapies," "sexual dysfunction-sex therapies," "marriage therapy," and "anxiety disorders" at the London Psychiatric Institute (Kings College).<\/p>\n
In 1992, he received the title of Associate Professor of Psychiatry. Following his professorship, he focused his research particularly on "Cognitive and Behavioral Therapies," "Sexual Dysfunction," "Marriage Therapies," and "Anxiety Disorders." In 1996, he served as the Founding President of the Cognitive and Behavioral Therapies Association, and in 1998, he became a founding member of the Sexual Education, Treatment, and Research Association. He currently serves as the President of the Cognitive and Behavioral Therapies Association. He has also served as the coordinator of the "Family and Couple Therapies" and "Cognitive Behavioral Therapies Working Unit" of the Turkish Psychiatric Association. He has been instrumental in promoting and establishing cognitive and behavioral therapies, which are among the most respected "evidence-based therapies" in the field of mental health, within Turkey, and continues to provide training on the effective use of these therapies both in Turkey and in various countries around the world.<\/p>\n
In 2000, he was elected president of the European Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies (EABCT). Dr. Sungur is accredited as a "cognitive-behavioral therapist" by the British Association for Psychotherapy and the British Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies. He is a founding member of the American Academy of Cognitive Therapy (Beck Academy) and a diplomat, certified trainer, and supervisor of the same academy. In 2017, he became the first non-American president of the International Association for Cognitive Therapies (IACP), headquartered in the USA. In 2018, he was elected president of the European Federation of Sexology for the next term. To date, he has chaired a total of 7 international congresses and numerous national congresses with international participation.<\/p>\n
In addition to his educational activities in various countries abroad, he serves as an editor, advisor, and member of the editorial board for numerous international and national scientific journals. He is also a member of the advisory board of many scientific journals in Turkey. He has published over 100 articles in scientific journals both in Turkey and abroad, as well as contributing to and editing various books and book chapters. He is the author of the widely read book, "You, Me, and Everything Between Us \u2013 Love, Marriage, Infidelity: The Devil's Triangle." He has also been a speaker at hundreds of conferences both in Turkey and abroad, and has led various working groups. He provides training to mental health professionals both in Turkey and abroad on topics such as "Cognitive Behavioral Therapies," "Couple Therapies," "Sexual Therapies," and "Anxiety Disorders," in accordance with European Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies training standards. In addition to numerous national and international professional awards, he was awarded a "gold medal" by the European Federation of Sexology for his contributions to couple and sex therapy. He currently works as a faculty member in the Department of Psychiatry at Marmara University Faculty of Medicine.<\/p>\n
